Philadelphia photographers were some of the first photographers in the world, and certainly they were amongst the first serious photographers in the USA.
Philadelphia was the home of the Photographic Society of America for most of the time that the organization was in existence.
That established Philadelphia photographers at the forefront of the art form, where they have pretty much stayed to this day. Philadelphia is a great place for photographers.
Julius F. Sachse wrote extensively in the nineteenth century of how influential Philadelphia photographers were in the development of the art.
He makes no idle claims, either, supporting his words with much evidence. Much of the science and technology on which photography is based were developed thanks to Philadelphia photographers.
Face It
Sachse proclaims Philadelphia as the home of the original photographic portraits. He credits Philadelphia photographers with making many of the major breakthroughs on which modern photography is founded, largely due to the generous funding and patronage of the American Philosophical Society and the Franklin Institute, both based in Philadelphia.
Philadelphia photographers opened the world’s first photographic portrait studio. The list of Philadelphia photographer’s contributions to modern photography goes on and on.
Philadelphia Photographers as Experimenters
It was Philadelphia photographers who first used bromine as an accelerant in developing photographs. This was a major development in making commercial photography viable, speeding up the process immeasurably.
Joseph Saxton created and exhibited the first ever heliograph. That was in Philadelphia too, in 1839. The same year, Philadelphia photographers took the world’s first photograph of a person’s face – a great breakthrough in photographing live and therefore moving things.
A couple of years later, Mr Saxton, one of a group of keen and ground-breaking Philadelphia photographers, made the first ever photo-mechanical reproduction of an image which brought together the advantages of the daguerreotype and the electrotype, advancing photography still further.
Inside Out
The world’s first successful interior photography was carried out by Philadelphia photographers in Philadelphia’s Natural History Museum. These original photographs still exist to be marveled at for their innovation and clarity.
What About Now?
All that was over a hundred years ago, so what have Philadelphia photographers been doing since then? Well – taking great photographs, really.
