How to Get a Great Picture of a Baby Handprint or Footprint

A picture of a baby footprint, tiny hand or other close-up and small item can be hard to get unless you know how to take high-quality, macro photographs from tight distances.

Basic Macro Mode
Most digital cameras come with a standard macro mode (this feature may also be called close-focus).
The macro setting lets you get really up close and personal with your subject (up to a few inches) - giving you some really cool results. However, it can also cause blurriness when you're shooting that close.
To activate the macro or close-focus function on an automatic camera, you'll need to push or select the macro-mode icon (typically represented by a tulip). By activating macro mode, you'll likely get a much better picture of baby footprint or handprint.
Keep an Eye Out for Parallax
When you're shooting your baby's footprint or handprint, be aware of parallax. Parallax is a common occurrence in digital photography, particularly when shooting close-ups.
Because the viewfinder is not in the exact same spot as the lens, you'll often get a different shot than you expected. So, set up your shot using the LCD preview screen instead of the optical viewfinder.
Get a Strong Depth of Field
When you're shooting close-ups, particular something as dark or shadowed as a baby's footprint, you'll often be battling lots of highlights and shadows.
This is because the closer you get to the footprint, the more narrow the field depth becomes (depth of field = the range of the photo that can be in focus).
For example, when you're just shooting a regular photo your depth of field might be a few feet. That means you can get lots of stuff in focus. But, if you're taking a picture of baby footprint from close up, your depth of field may only be a few inches.
Luckily, there's a solution - if your camera allows it. Switch the camera over to what's called aperture priority and choose the biggest value that you can (typically this is f/16 or f/32).
By increasing the aperture, you're maximizing your depth of field. The background may be blurry and indistinct, but your baby's footprint will be sharp and clear.
Invest in a Macro Lens
Finally, if you're still having trouble taking a great picture of baby footprint or handprints, then consider investing in a macro lens. Companies like Tiffen make macro lenses for lots of digital SLR and point-and-shoot cameras that come in both snap-on and screw-on modes.
These special lenses allow you to magnify your subject, maximize your depth of field and really improve a close-up, macro shot.
