Pregnancy photography is a beautiful way to capture those special, yet fleeting last few months of a pregnancy. To learn how to take incredible pregnancy photographs that are meaningful, without being cliché, keep reading for 7 great tips. Avoid Cliché Probably the best way to avoid taking cliché pictures is to know what they are. For example – Dad’s arms around the mother’s belly with his hands forming a heart around her belly button or dad with his head resting against mom’s belly. These are overdone, tired and should be avoided. Get Outdoors So many pregnancy photography shots are taken indoors (especially if any shots are being taken without clothing). But, getting outside for your shots lets you take advantage of natural light and the beauty of a pregnant woman juxtaposed against the natural beauty of the great outdoors. It’s breathtaking. Shoot Pregnancy Photos at Home Instead of dragging a mom-to-be out to a photo studio, try shooting in her own home. Pregnancy photography should be as relaxed and natural as possible. So, one way to get your subject to relax is to shoot them in a comfortable environment – like their home. Keep it Simple Everything in your pregnancy photographs should tell a story, so keep it simple. The story is the pregnancy, so avoid filling your frame with unnecessary elements or props. Help the Mom-To-Be Feel Beautiful Pregnant women don’t typically feel very attractive when pregnant. As a photographer, it’s your job to help her feel beautiful and bring that out in your pregnancy photography. A great way to do this is to talk to your subject throughout the shoot. Say things like “That’s wonderful,” “You look beautiful,” or “Oh, that smile is perfect, thank you.” Whatever works! Obviously, don’t overdo it and be genuine. Don’t Forget the Rest of the Family If a baby is coming into an already established family unit, then make sure to include them in at least a few shots. So, get the pets and the brothers and sisters in a few frames because yes, the story is the pregnancy, but it’s also about the family as a whole. If you have the time, try to get a few casual, action shots. For example, maybe mom spends a lot of time in the kitchen with the kids – if so, then get a few shots of her making lunch and hanging out with the kids. If they go to the local park every day, then take shots there. Make it Different This pregnancy photography tip is very similar to the first one (Avoid Cliché), but it’s worth mentioning again. With every pregnancy shoot you do, try to avoid doing the same shots. Mix it up and approach every shoot as a separate and distinct entity. See also: All Articles for Photography and Cameras
